New Orleans attorney Tanzanika Ruffin faces charges for allegedly stealing $250,000 from a client’s family by fabricating legal expenses.
New Orleans defense attorney Tanzanika Ruffin faces criminal charges for allegedly defrauding a client’s family of at least $250,000 by fabricating legal expenses, including a nonexistent criminal charge and false restitution demands.
Prosecutors say she collected multiple payments totaling over $250,000 between April and October, claiming funds were needed for bond, restitution, and legal services never provided.
The case stems from her representation of Kai Hansen, arrested in March for allegedly assaulting a police officer on Bourbon Street, with bond set at $8,000—far below the amounts she claimed were needed.
Court records show she admitted in court she never discussed restitution with prosecutors and presented a fabricated nondisclosure agreement.
Ruffin, who previously faced disciplinary action in 2004, could face criminal prosecution and disbarment, though a formal complaint must first be filed.
Her representatives have declined to comment, and she recently announced plans to run for criminal court judge.
The district attorney’s office has reported the allegations to the court.
