Island County froze five law-and-justice jobs due to budget concerns, delaying critical hires.
Island County commissioners have frozen five new law-and-justice positions pending a June budget review, citing concerns over rising costs from state mandates, a new jail, and vehicle leasing.
Commissioner Jill Johnson, who opposed the 2026 budget and a new sales tax, led the freeze motion, which was supported by Melanie Bacon and later backed by Janet St. Clair.
The move follows a contentious board meeting where Bacon criticized interpersonal conflicts between Johnson and St. Clair, stating she could not support either for chair in 2026.
Despite the tensions, Johnson and St. Clair later said they would support Bacon for chair.
The overall budget reduced 6.4 full-time-equivalent positions, with new hires intended to fill critical gaps but now delayed.
