India introduces law giving workers right to ignore after-hours work emails, with penalties for non-compliance.
India’s Lok Sabha has introduced the Right to Disconnect Bill, 2025, a private member’s bill by NCP MP Supriya Sule that grants employees the legal right to ignore work communications after hours and on holidays.
The bill aims to reduce burnout, stress, and “telepressure” caused by constant digital connectivity, proposing penalties of up to 1% of total employee remuneration for non-compliance.
It mandates overtime pay for out-of-hours work, requires companies with over 10 employees to negotiate after-hours policies, and establishes an Employees’ Welfare Authority to enforce the law.
The bill also promotes mental health support and digital detox initiatives.
It is part of broader efforts to modernize labor rights, alongside proposals for paid paternity leave and expanded protections for gig workers.
