Ghana shut down several mortuaries in the Eastern Region on Dec. 4, 2025, for failing sanitation, safety, and licensing standards.
The Mortuary and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) partially closed several mortuaries in Ghana’s Eastern Region on December 4, 2025, due to failure to meet sanitation, safety, and licensing standards. Facilities including Suhum and Kwahu Government Hospital Mortuaries, Adom Funeral Home, and others were shut for issues like poor waste disposal, lack of power and protective gear, and improper body storage. MoFFA, citing the Health Institutions and Facilities Act 829, gave operators two months to fix problems but found no compliance. The agency emphasized its authority to regulate all mortuaries and warned of penalties for non-compliance, urging all operators to register. Enforcement continues nationwide.
