French team finds 225 ushabti figurines, identifying Shoshenq III as tomb’s occupant despite no name on sarcophagus.
A French-led team led by Egyptologist Frédéric Payraudeau discovered 225 ancient ushabti figurines in a tomb at Tanis, Egypt, on October 9, 2025, solving a decades-old mystery about the tomb’s occupant.
The figurines, arranged in a star pattern and bearing royal symbols, identify the buried pharaoh as Shoshenq III, despite his name not appearing on the tomb’s large sarcophagus.
Experts believe political instability or looting during his reign may have prevented his burial there.
The find, the first intact discovery of its kind in Tanis since 1946, offers new insight into burial practices of the Third Intermediate Period and will be studied before being displayed in an Egyptian museum.
