Five Irish officers deny altering traffic cases; a top cop praised their integrity.
A senior Garda superintendent testified in a Dublin trial involving five current and former officers accused of interfering with traffic prosecutions, describing them as honest, humble, and dependable public servants dedicated to fighting gangland crime in Limerick.
The defendants, including retired Superintendent Eamon O’Neill and officers Tom McGlinchey and Colm Geary, deny 39 counts of unlawfully influencing traffic offence proceedings.
Evidence included text messages between O’Neill and Limerick hurler Sean Finn after Finn was caught speeding in 2019, with O’Neill reportedly asking McGlinchey to intervene.
McGlinchey acknowledged forwarding summonses and said prosecutors could choose to uphold or withdraw them.
Chief Superintendent John Scanlon was questioned under caution, and retired detective Walter O’Sullivan, who led the investigation, also testified.
The trial continues with no verdict.
