Dakota Zoo hatches two African penguin chicks, raising colony numbers and supporting conservation efforts.
The Dakota Zoo in Bismarck, North Dakota, has welcomed two new African penguin chicks, boosting its colony.
The chicks, from the first clutch of the season, are being raised by two foster penguin pairs to improve survival rates.
The zoo operates on reduced winter hours—Fridays through Sundays, 1 to 5 PM, weather permitting—from October to late April, with possible closures during extreme cold or holidays.
The chicks are currently behind the scenes, with viewing opportunities planned for later winter.
DNA testing from eggshells determined the chicks’ sex.
An online naming contest is expected soon, and visitors are encouraged to support conservation efforts for the critically endangered African penguin through the zoo’s Conservation Fund.
