Colorado urges Trump administration to restore federal Direct File tax program, citing savings and access benefits.
Colorado Gov.
Jared Polis is pushing the Trump administration to reinstate the federal Direct File tax program for 2026, calling its suspension disappointing.
The IRS-run tool, launched under Biden, offered free, accurate tax filing with pre-filled data, helping over 750,000 taxpayers in 25 states use it in 2025 despite no marketing.
Polis cited $126 million in refunds returned and $7.8 million in fee savings, with projections of $23 billion in annual nationwide savings.
He argued the program reduced errors and improved access, especially for low-income and nonfilers.
The Treasury ended it in November citing low participation—fewer than 300,000 returns—and high costs, but Polis said the $140 per return cost was still less than the average $290 paid to private preparers.
In response, Colorado will launch a pilot to help residents claim unfiled or underclaimed state tax credits through pre-filled returns.
