David Long, a 76-year-old Indian River County locksmith and U.S. Army veteran, was posthumously honored as an honorary deputy by the sheriff’s office during a funeral service on December 4, 2025.
Long was fatally shot on November 21 while assisting deputies during an eviction, after being hired to change locks at the request of the suspect’s mother.
The incident also claimed the life of Sgt.
Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, while the suspect died the following day.
The ceremony at Calvary Chapel in Vero Beach drew nearly 200 mourners, including family, law enforcement, and community members, who remembered Long as a kind, generous man with a strong sense of service.
Sheriff Eric Flowers praised his legacy of compassion and dedication, presenting Long’s honorary badge to his family during the service.
