A 1-year-old girl in Salem, Oregon, is recovering after being severely injured in a dog attack by two pit bulls that escaped from a neighbor’s apartment.
She sustained a skull fracture, lost significant scalp tissue, and suffered bite wounds to her face, back, and abdomen, requiring multiple surgeries and ongoing care at Randall Children’s Hospital.
One dog was euthanized, the other seized; Melinda Walker, 53, was charged with maintaining a dangerous dog and reckless endangerment.
The child’s mother, Merissa Corron, said she had previously reported concerns about the dogs’ aggression, including prior incidents, though police confirmed no prior official reports.
Both dogs were seized, and an online fundraiser has been launched to cover medical costs.
The child shows signs of recovery, including walking and smiling, but will need long-term treatment.
The investigation remains ongoing.
