A 91-year-old Frenchman donated $1M to save his village’s historic church from demolition.
A 91-year-old Frenchman, Raymond Landy, donated €1 million—about £750,000—earned from his brother’s inheritance to restore the historic church in his hometown of La Chapelle-sur-Aveyron, a village of around 640 people.
The donation will fund a major, single-phase restoration project beginning in spring 2026, including repairs to the roof, bell tower, and choir, with the goal of preserving the church for another 150 years.
The church, central to the village’s cultural and spiritual life, had been at risk of demolition.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled in Landy’s honor.
