Twin brothers indicted for deleting 96 federal databases after being fired, using AI to hide tracks.
Twin Virginia brothers Muneeb and Sohaib Akhter, 34, were indicted for allegedly deleting 96 government databases minutes after being fired from a federal contractor role in February 2025.
Prosecutors say Muneeb, despite having access revoked, used remaining privileges to delete sensitive records from agencies including Homeland Security and the IRS, including Freedom of Information Act files.
He reportedly used an AI tool to attempt to erase digital traces, while both brothers are accused of wiping employer laptops and discussing evidence destruction.
The men, who previously pleaded guilty to hacking in 2015, face federal charges with potential prison terms of up to 45 years for Muneeb and six years for Sohaib.
The case underscores serious security failures in contractor access management.
