South Africa opened its first new underground gold mine in 15 years, creating jobs and boosting the economy.
West Wits Mining has opened South Africa’s first new underground gold mine in 15 years, the Qala Shallows mine near Johannesburg, marking a key revival for the historic Witwatersrand Basin.
The project, fully funded with $35 million, has met all major milestones since July, including first ore extraction in mid-October, and is on track for its first gold pour in March 2026.
With a 5.025-million-ounce gold resource, the mine is projected to produce 70,000 ounces annually for 12 years, declining to 40,000–50,000 ounces in later years, with an initial 17-year life.
It will generate over 1,000 direct jobs and contribute more than $1.15 billion to the economy, with future expansions aiming for 200,000 ounces per year.
