Saskatchewan now blocks name changes for certain serious offenders and requires fingerprinted criminal checks.
Saskatchewan has expanded restrictions on legal name changes, effective December 4, 2025, denying requests for those convicted of murder, serious drug offences involving Schedule I substances, and individuals designated as dangerous, long-term, or high-risk offenders.
Applicants must now provide a fingerprinted, certified criminal record check.
The changes, aimed at public safety and accountability, apply to about 1,000 annual name change applications.
