Red squirrels have expanded their range by over 25% in Scotland’s Highlands due to a Trees for Life reintroduction project.
Since 2015, 259 squirrels have been relocated to 13 new sites, establishing at least 12 thriving populations in areas where they were absent for decades, including Brora, Ullapool, and Morvern.
The effort, authorized by NatureScot, targets grey squirrel-free habitats to protect against invasive greys and the deadly squirrel pox virus.
The project supports genetic diversity, uses supplemental feeding, and is part of a broader £3.6 million Missing Species Programme aiming to restore red squirrels, lynx, beavers, and a modern aurochs-like cattle breed.
Scotland hosts about 80% of the UK’s red squirrels.
