The Red Sox traded for pitchers Johan Oviedo and Tyler Samaniego, plus catcher Adonys Guzman, from the Pirates on Dec. 4, 2025.
The Boston Red Sox acquired starting pitcher Johan Oviedo, left-handed reliever Tyler Samaniego, and minor league catcher Adonys Guzman from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a five-player trade on December 4, 2025.
In return, Pittsburgh received rookie outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and pitching prospect Jesus Travieso.
Oviedo, recovering from Tommy John surgery and a lat strain, made a partial 2025 debut, posting a 3.57 ERA with a career-best 24.7% strikeout rate but struggled with control, walking batters at a 13.5% rate.
The Red Sox view him as a potential rotation piece behind Garret Crochet, Sonny Gray, and Brayan Bello, while the Pirates aim to build with Garcia, a 23-year-old right-handed hitter with power and MLB experience.
The trade cleared a 40-man roster spot for Boston after designating right-hander Cooper Criswell for assignment.
