Nigeria’s legislature votes on a bill creating 37 new women-only seats to boost female representation in government.
Nigeria’s National Assembly is set to vote on the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, a landmark measure proposing 37 additional Senate and House seats for women, plus three per state assembly, to address the country’s severe gender imbalance in politics.
Despite women comprising nearly half the population, they hold fewer than 5% of legislative seats.
The bill, which creates temporary, separate constituencies, aims to overcome systemic barriers like patriarchy, funding gaps, and electoral violence, and is scheduled for review after 16 years.
Advocates, including First Lady Remi Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, say it aligns with international gender equality commitments and will make governance more inclusive and representative.
