New Zealand sailor Kristen Kotuhi named 2025 Defence Force Person of the Year for leadership and technical excellence.
Acting Petty Officer Marine Technician Kristen Kotuhi of the Royal New Zealand Navy has been named the 2025 New Zealand Defence Force Person of the Year, receiving the RNZN Sailor of the Year award.
Honored at a Wellington ceremony by Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Tony Davies, Kotuhi was recognized for her leadership, technical excellence, and contributions to boat readiness, diving operations, and maritime explosive ordnance disposal aboard HMNZS Matataua.
Her mentorship, safety focus, and team-building efforts strengthened unit performance.
Raised in Tokoroa and Kawerau as the eldest of eight daughters, she joined the military after school recruitment events, drawn by opportunities for growth and service.
The award, symbolized by a huia feather and a traditional cloak, honors those who embody NZDF values.
