New Zealand plans to cut 21 public health roles, sparking concerns over pandemic and disaster readiness.
The New Zealand Ministry of Health is proposing to cut 21 roles within its Public Health Agency, including slashing the emergency management team from 11 to two positions and the Māori public health team from six to two.
The changes, driven by budget constraints, have drawn criticism from the Public Service Association and public health experts who warn the loss of specialized expertise undermines the country’s preparedness for pandemics, climate-related disasters, and persistent health inequities, especially for Māori.
Staff consultations end December 22, with implementation expected by April 2026.
