Montana cuts non-resident deer tags by 2,500 to ease public land overcrowding.
Montana has limited non-resident deer hunting licenses to half the number of general deer tags, separate from elk combo licenses, to address overcrowding on public lands, reducing potential non-resident tags by about 2,500 annually and costing an estimated $1.7 million in lost revenue.
The Fish and Wildlife Commission approved the change 6-0, also cutting resident deer tag limits from eight to three by combining mule and white-tailed deer permits.
A proposal to restrict non-residents to one elk harvest per year failed.
The changes follow House Bill 568, which requires a state study on non-resident hunting impacts.
