A Melbourne court found 61-year-old Zev Serebryanski guilty of abusing child survivor Manny Waks in the 1980s.
Child sexual abuse survivor Manny Waks urged others to come forward after his abuser, Zev "Velvel" Serebryanski, 61, was found guilty by a Victorian County Court jury of indecent assault and sexual penetration of a child between 1986 and 1988 during the Shavuot festival at Melbourne’s Yeshivah Centre.
The abuse occurred when Waks was 10 to 12 years old, with prosecutors saying Serebryanski followed him upstairs and assaulted him in a bathroom, causing Waks to black out.
Waks reported the abuse in 1996 and confronted Serebryanski in 2017, who denied the claims, saying he believed Waks wanted the contact.
The defense questioned memory reliability and the investigation, but the jury returned guilty verdicts.
Serebryanski will face a pre-sentence hearing, with bail extended.
Waks, a survivor advocate, said pursuing justice was emotionally and financially costly but meaningful, encouraging survivors to seek help through 1800 RESPECT and other support services.
