Italy to open Europe’s first dolphin sanctuary near Taranto by mid-2026, rehabilitating captive dolphins in a protected coastal habitat.
Italy is set to open Europe’s first marine dolphin sanctuary off Taranto’s coast in Puglia by mid-2026, featuring a seven-hectare enclosure with advanced monitoring, veterinary care, and quarantine facilities.
Funded by private donors, the Jonian Dolphin Conservation group, and European funds, the site will provide a supervised natural habitat for dolphins previously in captivity.
Though it can hold up to 17 dolphins, officials will admit only a carefully selected few based on health and social needs.
The project responds to growing animal welfare concerns and marine park closures across Europe, with hopes it will serve as a model for future re-homing efforts.
Environmental improvements near the industrial city of Taranto have addressed pollution concerns, and the sanctuary’s annual operating cost is estimated at €350,000 to €500,000.
