Ireland investigates Microsoft over alleged GDPR violations in enabling Israeli military's mass surveillance data storage in EU.
The Irish Data Protection Commission is investigating Microsoft after a complaint by human rights group Eko alleging the company violated EU privacy laws by enabling the Israeli military to store mass surveillance data on its cloud servers in Ireland and the Netherlands.
The complaint claims Microsoft facilitated the transfer of Palestinian phone data, used for surveillance in Gaza and the West Bank, despite GDPR protections.
While Microsoft says the Israeli military’s data transfers were customer-driven and that it ended services in September, whistleblowers allege the company quickly moved large volumes of data after a Guardian report.
The DPC is assessing the case under GDPR, with broader concerns about tech companies’ roles in conflict zones.
