Indonesian authorities charged a Chinese man with causing cesium-137 contamination at a Banten smelter, linked to radioactive scrap exports.
Indonesian authorities have charged Lin Jingzhang, a Chinese national and former director of PT Peter Metal Technology, with causing cesium-137 contamination at a metal smelting plant in Serang, Banten, after radiation was detected in scrap metal processing.
The plant, which operated from September 2024 to July 2025 and exported all products to China, is linked to elevated radiation levels found in shipments to the U.S. and the Netherlands, including frozen shrimp and footwear.
Investigators believe the contamination originated from used industrial equipment containing cesium-137, which was processed without proper oversight.
Around 20 factories in the Cikande Industrial Estate were affected, nine workers were exposed and treated, and contaminated materials—1,136 tons in total—are being held in temporary storage due to a lack of long-term disposal facilities.
Lin, who has agreed to cooperate, faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to Rp8 billion under Indonesia’s environmental law.
