India protests U.S. treatment of deported Sikh woman Harjit Kaur, who endured harsh conditions during 60–70 hour detention.
Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed on December 4, 2025, that 73-year-old Harjit Kaur, a Sikh woman deported from the U.S. in September, was mistreated during her 60–70 hour detention by ICE despite not being handcuffed upon arrival in India.
She was held in a Georgia facility, forced to sleep on the floor without a bed, denied suitable food, and given only ice to take medication despite double knee replacements.
Kaur, who had lived in California for over 30 years and had exhausted all legal appeals, was deported without being allowed to say goodbye to family.
India formally raised the issue with the U.S. Embassy and called for an investigation.
