A glass walkway over a 1,800-year-old Roman mosaic in Colchester will open by mid-2026, boosting tourism and local business.
A new glass walkway in Colchester, set to open by late 2026 and possibly as early as mid-2026, will allow shoppers to view a 1,800-year-old Roman mosaic uncovered in 2022 beneath Red Lion Yard.
The 150-square-meter illuminated display, approved by Colchester Council and led by local officials and museums, will be built by Purcell Architecture without disrupting shop access or requiring closures.
Officials and the shopping centre’s boss, Martin Leatherdale, say the project aims to boost tourism, foot traffic, and local business while enhancing the city’s cultural profile.
Construction will proceed in phases with public visibility, and the shopping centre will maintain the display after opening.
