A bill to designate West Augustine as the site for the Florida Museum of Black History and create a governing board has stalled in the House, where it hasn’t received a hearing despite passing a Senate committee.
While $1 million was allocated for the West Augustine site in the 2025–2026 budget, the governor redirected the funds to a Black history museum in Opa-Locka.
State Representative Angie Nixon questioned the selection process, citing potential political influence, while Senator Tom Leek defended West Augustine’s historical significance and said the museum will be built regardless of legislative approval.
The bill remains pending in multiple House committees with no scheduled hearing.
