Brazilian professor arrested for firing pellet gun near MA synagogue, denied hate motive, received probation and agreed to leave U.S.
Brazilian visiting professor Carlos Portugal Gouvea, a Harvard Law School lecturer, was arrested by ICE after pleading guilty to firing a pellet gun near a Massachusetts synagogue before Yom Kippur.
The U.S. State Department revoked his visa, calling the act an "anti-Semitic shooting," but local police and the synagogue stated they did not believe it was hate-motivated.
Gouvea claimed he was hunting rats and was unaware of the synagogue’s presence or the religious holiday.
He received six months of pretrial probation and agreed to leave the U.S., avoiding deportation.
The case unfolded amid tensions between the Trump administration and Harvard, which has sued over federal grant terminations.
