Australia’s High Court will review a teen’s reduced murder sentence in the 2022 killing of Emma Lovell.
The High Court of Australia will hear an appeal over the reduced sentence of a 17-year-old who killed Emma Lovell during a 2022 home invasion in Queensland.
Initially sentenced to 14 years, the teen’s term was cut by nearly 18 months on appeal, leading to a release date of 2031.
Queensland’s Attorney-General Deb Frecklington secured special leave to appeal, arguing the original sentence was too lenient and that new “adult crime, adult time” laws would now mandate a life sentence.
The case has sparked debate over youth sentencing and led to legal changes in Queensland.
A hearing date has not yet been set.
