Australia will require search engines to block porn and violent content for children starting December 27.
Starting December 27, Australian search engines must blur pornography and violent content to protect children from accidental exposure, following research showing one in three young people encounter porn unintentionally before age 13.
The rules, enforced by the eSafety Commissioner, require search engines to operate like safe search modes on Google and Bing, and redirect searches related to suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders to mental health support.
The measures do not require account creation or government monitoring.
They are separate from a social media ban restricting users under 16 from creating accounts on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which remains in effect despite legal challenges.
Companies failing to comply face fines up to $49.5 million.
