She served 16 years in the state legislature, becoming the first Republican woman in the Alabama House in 1978 and the first woman in the Senate in 1982.

A 1994 gubernatorial primary candidate, she was known for her resilience and wit, overcoming early resistance in politics.
Her legacy was honored with a 2023 commemorative day at the school she helped establish.
A celebration of her life is set for December 5, 2025.
