The Women’s Institute will limit membership to women assigned female at birth from April 2026, citing a UK Supreme Court ruling on sex under the Equality Act.
The Women’s Institute (WI) will restrict formal membership to individuals assigned female at birth starting April 2026, following a UK Supreme Court ruling that defines "woman" and "sex" under the Equality Act 2010 as biological.
The National Federation of Women’s Institutes said the decision, made with "utmost regret," is necessary to maintain legal status as a women’s charity, though it continues to affirm transgender women as women.
To support inclusion, the WI plans to launch "Sisterhood groups" for transgender women and others.
The move follows a similar policy by Girlguiding, and trans rights advocates have criticized it as forced by legal pressure, urging the government to release long-delayed guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
