Victoria now requires driver’s licence applicants to be asked about organ donation to boost registration rates.
Starting today, Victorians applying for a driver’s licence must be asked about organ donation, part of a push to increase registration rates that currently stand at 23% and fall to 10% among youth.
The change follows 41 recommendations from a 2024 parliamentary inquiry, with early efforts like a VicRoads pop-up message already generating 127 new registrations after 400,000 views.
While long-term impact remains uncertain due to infrequent licence renewals, the government plans to link to donor registration sites across Service Victoria by mid-2026.
South Australia’s 72% donor rate under a similar system highlights the potential.
The full government response to the inquiry will be presented in parliament Thursday.
