U.S. to require visa applicants to make social media public for security checks starting Dec. 15, 2025.
The U.S. State Department is requiring H-1B, H-4, F, M, and J visa applicants to set their social media profiles to public starting December 15, 2025, as part of expanded national security screening.
The move, part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, mandates public access to accounts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube to allow consular officers to review applicants’ online activity.
The policy applies to new applicants, renewals, and dependents, with officials assessing potential risks related to misinformation, content moderation, and suppression of free expression.
It follows earlier restrictions, including a pause on Green Card and asylum applications from 19 high-risk countries and a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas.
While the State Department has not confirmed automatic denials for non-compliance, applicants are advised to comply to avoid delays.
