UK launches review of mental health, autism, and ADHD diagnoses amid surge in sickness benefits.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has launched a review into mental health, autism, and ADHD diagnoses amid rising welfare claims, with 4.4 million working-age people now on sickness benefits—1.2 million more since 2019.
The review, led by Professor Peter Fonagy and Sir Simon Wessely, aims to assess whether normal emotional states are being overdiagnosed and to evaluate the effectiveness of current services.
It follows earlier setbacks in welfare reform and reflects Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s push to fix a system he says traps people in poverty and unemployment.
The findings are expected to inform future policy.
