A safety volunteer was charged with felony manslaughter after accidentally killing a bystander during a protest confrontation.
Matthew Alder, a safety volunteer at a June 2025 "No Kings" protest in Salt Lake City, has been charged with second-degree felony manslaughter in the death of Arthur “Afa” Ah Loo, a fashion designer and bystander, during a confrontation involving an armed man.
Alder, who fired three shots, intended to stop Arturo Gamboa, who was carrying an AR-15, but accidentally killed Ah Loo.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill stated the third shot was reckless, violating Utah’s open-carry and self-defense laws despite Alder’s legal right to bear arms.
Gamboa was not charged due to insufficient evidence, and Alder is not considered a flight risk.
Ah Loo’s widow welcomed the charge as a step toward justice.
