Richard Nelson, former state rep and revenue secretary, appointed president of Louisiana’s community college system for 2026.
Richard Nelson, Louisiana’s Secretary of the Department of Revenue and a former state representative, has been appointed president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, effective January 1, 2026.
A 2023 gubernatorial candidate and LSU graduate with degrees in biological engineering and law, Nelson brings experience from the U.S. Foreign Service, private sector, and state government.
He will lead the state’s 12 community and technical colleges, succeeding retiring President Monty Sullivan, amid a broader leadership transition across Louisiana’s higher education system.
The appointment, made without a formal search, includes a $400,000 base salary and additional benefits.
Nelson, known for tax reform and workforce development, emphasized his commitment to improving access to education and economic opportunity.
