Ontario to review standardized testing after delayed results show weak math gains and persistent gaps.
Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra has announced a review of the province’s standardized testing system after delayed EQAO results showed only modest gains in student performance, particularly in math, with Grade 3 and 6 math scores rising slightly but still falling short of targets.
He cited persistent achievement gaps and disparities between school boards despite similar funding, calling the progress insufficient.
Calandra will appoint two advisers to assess curriculum alignment, teacher preparation, student supports, and testing effectiveness, aiming to identify systemic issues.
The results, released in December 2025 after a months-long delay, prompted criticism from educators and opposition parties who questioned the timing and value of standardized testing, while the government maintains the review is essential for data-driven reforms.
