Olympic diver Sam Fricker urges Newcastle to keep Lambton Pool’s diving open temporarily during safety upgrades despite closure over fall risks.
Hunter Olympic diver Sam Fricker is urging the City of Newcastle to keep Lambton Pool’s diving facilities open temporarily during safety upgrades after a SafeWork NSW inspection found fall and slip risks on the 62-year-old tower and springboards, leading to a closure of most diving boards.
The city maintains the closure is necessary to comply with safety regulations and avoid liability, despite calls from Fricker, world champion Rhiannan Iffland, and the Hunter United Diving Academy to allow limited use while railings and other fixes are installed.
The club, with 70 members, now has only one springboard available.
Officials are assessing repair options and costs, acknowledging the pool’s 1960s design doesn’t meet modern standards.
