A New Zealand man was sentenced to at least 5 years in prison for assaulting two women at Ōtara Creek Reserve in 2023 and 2024.
A 33-year-old Ōtara man, Johnathan Tamihana, has been sentenced to preventative detention with a minimum five-year non-parole period after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault, threatening to kill, and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.
The crimes occurred in February 2023 and January 2024 at Ōtara Creek Reserve, involving two women in separate attacks.
Police identified Tamihana through investigation and CCTV footage after initially being unable to solve the first incident.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Batey praised the victims' courage and emphasized the seriousness of the offenses.
The sentence was handed down at Auckland High Court on December 4, 2025.
