Irish farmers urge EU to protect agricultural funding and address key farming challenges.
A joint delegation from the Irish Farmers’ Association and Ulster Farmers’ Union visited the European Parliament in Brussels, hosted by Leitrim MEP Nina Carberry.
They urged for a strengthened, ring-fenced Common Agricultural Policy and opposed the EU Commission’s plan to merge agricultural and cohesion funding.
Key concerns included Ireland’s nitrates derogation, generational renewal in farming, the Mercosur trade deal, and animal health issues like bird flu and bluetongue.
Carberry emphasized advancing women’s roles in agriculture.
The visit included a farm tour and meetings with EU officials.
