Illinois launched its official celebration of the U.S. 250th anniversary on December 4, 2025, marking both the nation’s milestone and the state’s 207th birthday.
Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois America 250 Commission unveiled a year-long initiative featuring inclusive storytelling, youth art contests, and a statewide archival project with Story Corps Studios, with recordings archived at the Library of Congress.
A commemorative passport will guide residents to historic sites, including Fort de Chartes and Kaskaskia’s Liberty Bell of the West.
The effort includes programming for the 100th anniversary of Route 66, tribal recognition led by Indigenous leaders, and $300,000 in public art funding.
Over 200 organizations and all 102 counties are involved, with events across museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions.
The celebration aims to boost tourism and local economies, building on a record 2024 visitor year.
