Former Croatian MP and son charged in scheme to make and sell 1.3 million fake COVID tests across Europe.
A former Croatian MP, Filip Mihalic, 66, and his son, Anjelko Mihalic, 26, known as the "Corona Kid," have been charged in Croatia over a scheme to produce and distribute more than 1.3 million fake COVID-19 tests.
The tests were made in Istanbul from August 2022 to May 2023 and sold across Europe, including Greece, Romania, Austria, Spain, and Germany.
Prosecutors say the operation earned 445,932 euros, with profits allegedly laundered through the son’s accounts.
The elder Mihalic faces counterfeiting charges; the younger is also charged with money laundering.
The case has been sent to the Varaždin Municipal Court, with authorities seeking to seize all illicit funds.
