Fire and Emergency NZ seeks strike pause amid pay dispute, offering 6.2% raise over three years.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has welcomed the Employment Relations Authority’s referral to facilitation in its 16-month dispute with the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union, urging the union to suspend planned strikes to protect public safety.
The agency’s latest offer includes a 6.2% average pay rise over three years, raising senior firefighter salaries to $86,000–$93,000, excluding overtime, and says it aligns with other public sector deals.
Despite this, the union continues to protest, citing outdated equipment, staffing shortages, and safety risks, and maintains strike notices for December 5, 12, and 19.
The ERA will hold a case management conference to begin facilitation, with both sides expected to engage in good faith.
