Canadian 23andMe users may get up to $2,500 in compensation from a $4.49M settlement over a 2023 data breach.
Canadians affected by a 2023 data breach at 23andMe may receive compensation from a proposed $4.49 million class-action settlement, with payouts up to $2,500 for documented expenses or about $17.77 without proof. The breach, which exposed sensitive data of nearly seven million people globally—including 320,000 in Canada—occurred between April and September 2023. Eligible individuals resided in Canada and received a breach notification between May 1 and October 1, 2023. The settlement, part of 23andMe’s bankruptcy proceedings, requires court approval and does not admit liability. Legal fees of 33% will be deducted from the total fund.
