Brantford city council seeks provincial help to transfer airport ownership from county to city to boost economic development.
Brantford city council is urging the provincial government to transfer ownership of the Brantford Municipal Airport from the County of Brant to the city, citing stalled economic development and lost revenue from property taxes and development charges.
While the city operates the airport, the county owns the land, leading council to argue that provincial intervention is needed after failed negotiations.
At a recent meeting, councillors voted 8-2 to request that Minister Rob Flack appoint a commission to explore the transfer, which could unlock development of 40 acres of underutilized land.
Opponents suggested using the city-county liaison committee instead but were overruled, as it lacks authority without a prior agreement.
