A 2025 Amnesty report exposes severe abuses at Florida’s Everglades Detention Facility, despite a judge’s order to close it over safety risks.
A 2025 Amnesty International report documents severe human rights abuses at two Florida immigration detention facilities, including the newly opened Everglades Detention Facility, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” The investigation reveals detainees were held for up to a day in a small, hot metal cage without water, exposed to insects and extreme heat, while both sites face overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, inadequate medical care, and prolonged solitary confinement.
Despite a federal judge ordering the closure of “Alligator Alcatraz” in August over safety concerns, it resumed operations in October after two Trump-appointed judges blocked the order.
The report calls for an end to mass immigration detention, closure of the facility, and compliance with international human rights standards.
