Alberta's premier faces recall effort after Elections Alberta approved petition campaign.
A recall petition against Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been officially approved by Elections Alberta, allowing a three-month campaign to gather signatures equal to 60% of votes in her 2023 Brooks-Medicine Hat riding. The effort, led by Heather VanSnick and the group Operation Total Recall, cites Smith’s use of the notwithstanding clause and lack of constituent consultation as key reasons. Smith has one week to respond before the petition is formally issued. While UCP members including ministers support her, opposition leaders say the recall reflects public concerns over accountability. No changes to the Recall Act are planned.
