Two Australian mustering pilots died in a 2024 helicopter collision due to lack of formal separation rules.
A 2024 midair collision in Western Australia’s Kimberley region killed two experienced mustering pilots, Peter Ritter and Gavin U’Ren, after their Robinson R22 helicopters collided shortly after takeoff from Mount Anderson Station.
The ATSB found the crash was caused by the absence of formal separation protocols, leading pilots to routinely fly with reduced vertical and lateral spacing—an informal but unsafe practice.
No evasive maneuvers were observed, and environmental factors like dust may have impaired visibility.
The ATSB emphasized that relying solely on "see-and-avoid" is insufficient and recommended standardized safety procedures for multi-helicopter operations.
In response, the operator updated its safety protocols, and a scholarship in the pilots’ honor was established to support future agricultural aviation professionals.
