A Toronto garbage truck driver died Tuesday morning after being struck by the vehicle he was operating in Scarborough.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at Morningside Avenue and Sewells Road, where the truck rolled away while the driver was outside, hitting him before colliding with a light pole.
The 66-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed the truck was city-owned, and the provincial Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation.
No further details about the cause have been released.
Mayor Olivia Chow and union officials expressed condolences, and the city pledged support to the worker’s family.
